Bengaluru: Today’s young generation showing great interest in learning Mridangam, the most important rhythmic instrument of Carnatic Classical Music, is a promising development in the society, amid the clamor of Western instruments, our Indian musical instruments should be the foundation of music education, said Vidwan Narendra, a senior Mridangam scholar.
Speaking as a Mridangam Guru, he inaugurated the Mridangam education department started in Rajarajeshwari Nagar by Swaramedha organization. Sanskrit “Mrit” and “Anga” is Mridanga, Mrit means soil. In ancient times, Mridangam was first made from mud. Over time, they started making it from jackfruit and other trees in view of longevity, he said. Dr. Chinmaya Rao, founder of Swaramedha, social workers Chalapati, Phaniraj and others were present on this occasion.
