50 Photos

Hosagunda is a place of historical & religious importance, with many temples dating back a thousand years. Situated 60 kms from Shimoga, Karnataka and around 16 kms from Sagar, these magnificent temples and stone inscriptions narrate tales of a bygone era. They speak of royal traditions, of a culturally rich and spiritually oriented society and of a town that served as a capital for more than 300 years.

The stone inscriptions, found in the forest around Hosagunda, reveal the secrets of Santhara Dynasty of 1100 AD. The worshippers of Lord Billeshwara of Humcha migrated to Hosagunda, declared themselves as “The Kings” of Hosagunda and ruled for nearly 300 years. Based on a recently excavated stone inscription, King Bhujabala is expected to be the first ruler of Hosagunda.
